What are Clear Aligners?

Clear Aligners are composed of nearly invisible polyurethane plastic, as the name implies. Unlike metal or transparent braces, which are fastened or bonded to the teeth, clear aligners are fully removable – for crucial social occasions, eating, and, most importantly, tooth brushing and flossing. This benefit can also be a disadvantage: it means you’ll have to fight the urge to take your aligners out more than is recommended.

How Clear Aligners Works

Traditional braces function by applying carefully controlled forces to teeth to reposition them into a better position. Clear aligners work in the same way. They are, however, not constructed of metal, but rather of translucent, flexible plastic.

The following is how it works: The plan for repositioning your teeth from their existing placements into the finest potential alignment is created using specialized computer software. This movement will be split down into a number of stages, possibly several dozen.

The clear aligners providers will make two plastic mouth “trays” or “aligners” for each step, one to fit over your top teeth and one to fit over your bottom teeth. This first set of trays will be worn for two weeks, with a minimum of 22 hours per day.
